Apparently there’s quite a bit of misinformation within his sales and support teams. Update: Sometimes I forget who reads this blog and my Twitter posts! A few hours after posting the above I got a call from an apologetic product manager at Intuit. But the support people quoted me $159 so when I called Sales I held them to that price and they approved it.

P.s.: Officially, there’s no “upgrade” price for QuickBooks for Mac 2010. I sure wish I knew of a viable alternative to QuickBooks for Mac that was suitable for a small non-profit. There are a lot of apps and vendors whose software I find annoying (eg, Adobe), but none are as sleazy as Intuit.

Again: the app runs fine it just thinks it’s unregistered and therefore stops after 15 executions.

Let’s be honest here: If Intuit wanted to support its customers, they’d send out a fix to their registration program so that people who needed to re-install under an upgraded OS could so so. And none of these programs died just because I replaced the logic board. Heck, even that stuff from sleazy Adobe still works. I’m still running an antique version of Microsoft Office. I can count on a few fingers the software that forces me to buy a new version when upgrading the OS.

The only choice: Upgrade to QuickBooks 2010. Only problem: Their registration program won’t run under SnowLeopard (OS X 10.6). When it came back, QuickBooks decided I was using an unregistered copy of the software and asked me to register. A few weeks ago I sent my Mac out for repairs and they had to replace the main logic board. This latest in price, and their sheer gall at touting the benefit of the 100 to 200% increase as being inclusion of support, is what turned me so far against them. Here at the non-profit Conversations Network we’ve been using QuickBooks for Mac 2007 since…2007. I was very satisfied with QuickBooks for many years.

I look forward to the day a competitor comes up with something good enough, which has excellent support, that matches all the features QuickBooks Desktop Pro currently has or at least gives us a way to have all the functionality we currently have without excessive sacrifice so that we can switch. However, we have to use the product because it is ubiquitous. Considering that they recently doubled (or, if you are paying annually, tripled) their pricing, and touted as one of the benefits that it includes support, it's a real ripoff. Many of them don't speak particularly good English. They appear to have typically said, first-level script readers who are sending messages to the senior people for anything even a little bit difficult. Intuit doesn't spend real money on support. I look forward to the day that an honest, better-priced competitor wipes the floor with Intuit. Now they just turn out bloatware that everyone uses, so the rest of us have to. They are moving to a rental model even for those who refuse to use the LOUSY QuickBooks online. If one does not subscribe beyond the first year, one will not be able to use the software beyond the first year. They also doubled their prices for software upgrades this year, and require those who don't pay double what the last upgrade cost, to subscribe every year for $200. I'm very happy for all those outside Intuit who make their living supporting QuickBooks Desktop Pro third-party support is desperately needed. the support is lousy, the product is overpriced, but it does the basics of what we need. I do not stand by the company, and will not use the product any longer than I have to. I am only going to recommend it because it is currently ubiquitous, and most accountants prefer it at the moment.
